この作品はインドの叙事詩「ラーマヤナ」から想を得たものである。主人公ラーマは義母の奸計により皇太子の地位を剥奪され、国を追われる。森での隠棲中に妻シータを魔王ラーヴァナに攫われる。ラーマはラーヴァナが住むランカ島に渡り、激闘の末にラーヴァナを打ち破り、シータを取り戻す。ラーヴァナを打ち破ったことでラーマは再び国に迎え入れられ、王位につく。ラーマヤナを題材にした芸能ではこのハッピーエンドの部分で終わることが多い。ところがじつはそうではなく、物語はその後に厳しい部分が続く。シータは幽閉されている間の不貞の疑いを国民からかけられる。無実を証明するために火の中に入り、ついには絶望して大地の割れ目に身を投げる。私自身が書いた詩は、歌い手をシータになぞらえ、そのシータに自身の非情な運命を語らせる内容になっている。
The Eadth, Accept Me!, Tone Poem for Female Voice, Timpani and Percussions
I have found musical inspiration for this piece in the Indian epic, “Ramayana.” The main character, prince Rama, is stripped of his status as the Crown Prince through his stepmother’s ruse and is banished from the country. During his secluded life in the forest, his wife Sita is carried off by the ogre king Ravana. Rama makes inroads into the island of Lanka, where Ravana lives, in order to rescue Sita. Rama destroys Ravana at the end of the battle and rescues Sita, and Rama returns in glory and becomes the new king. However, the people suspect that Sita has been unfaithful with Ravana. Sita dives in the fire and throws herself into a crack in the earth in order to prove her innocence. This piece expresses the intense destiny of Sita. A female singer performs the role of Sita and expresses her profound grief.
